first_img“The honourable thing for them to do now is to stand down and fight by-elections back in their constituencies.”Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell says seven MPs who resigned from the Labour party should seek re-election. pic.twitter.com/JuFEZMSEix— Channel 4 News (@Channel4News) February 18, 2019John McDonnell has called on those MPs who have quit the Labour Party today to “stand down and fight by-elections”.The seven ex-Labour MPs today confirmed that they had quit the party but did not have plans to resign from parliament, which means their constituents won’t be offered the opportunity to vote for a Labour MP until the next general election. The Shadow Chancellor told Channel 4 News: “All of these MPs stood on our manifesto in 2017… they all increased their majorities, now they’re on a different platform.“The honourable thing, the usual thing for them to do now is to stand down and fight by-elections back in their constituencies.”On what the Labour Party will be doing in response to the news, McDonnell said: “We’ll do what we’re doing always, which is an open door, we’re listening to people all the time.”He added: “The argument that we no longer support a people’s vote was put forward. That’s not the case – we’ve deliberately kept that on the table.”Tags:Labour /John McDonnell /The Independence Group /last_img read more

Under the partnership agreement Saints will allow

first_imgUnder the partnership agreement Saints will allow first team squad players to feature for Leigh in the Betfred Championship.Saints Chief Executive Mike Rush said: “We’re grateful to both John Duffy and the Centurions for entering into an agreement which will be beneficial for both clubs.“There have always been strong ties between the two clubs and there are strong friendships between key members of both organisations.“In reaching this decision, we considered the close proximity between the two clubs, the fine facilities that Leigh have and the excellent relationship and regard we hold for John Duffy, Paul Anderson and the other Leigh staff and officials.“Over the course of the season some members of our first team squad will need more game time for various reasons and this partnership will allow them to get that, playing at a good level in the Championship and in the right environment.“We look forward to watching our players develop from this agreement.”Leigh Centurions head coach John Duffy confirmed the partnership agreement was finalised after a meeting with Mike Rush and Saints head coach Justin Holbrook.Duffy said: “The opportunity to be able to partner a club like Saints is extremely beneficial for us, especially when you consider the calibre of player we will get each week.“We were on the back foot with starting our squad recruitment late and are down on numbers so we will now augment that with quality players and quality people.“We had a good meeting at Saints with Mike and Justin and also Paul Wellens and Ian Talbot from the coaching staff. They have trust in us that their players will get treated and coached in the right way and they acknowledge that their players have got to earn the right to play for Leigh Centurions with their performances in training and matches.“It’s a great partnership for Leigh Centurions and I’m sure will be extremely beneficial also for Saints. I’m confident the relationship between the two clubs will continue to flourish.”last_img read more

Food truck owners sue Carolina Beach over unconstitutional ordinance

first_imgNEW HANOVER COUNTY —  Food truck owners are taking on the town of Carolina Beach. They say the town passed unfair ordinances, and now they’re ready to do something about it.“Carolina Beach has turned the bridge to its island into a drawbridge that it has pulled up on competition. That’s not just wrong. It’s unconstitutional,” said attorney Justin Pearson.- Advertisement – Pearson says the town of Carolina Beach broke the law when they created an ordinance that banned food trucks for anyone that has not owned a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the town for more than a year.“We are here to hopefully convince Carolina Beach to do the right thing. I should point out that even if they banned food trucks entirely that would also be unconstitutional. But what’s particularly interesting about what’s going on in Carolina Beach is that they come right out and admit that they have no problem with food trucks, they just don’t like competition from outsiders,” said Pearson.Pearson is a senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, a national non-profit law firm that represents small business owners fighting unconstitutional laws.Related Article: Get your shag on this weekend at annual Carolina Beach Music FestivalAaron and Monica Cannon, who own A&M’s Red Food Truck, say the Institute for Justice reached out to them when they learned of the ordinance. They didn’t think they needed the help, until the town approached them while they were catering a private event.“He told the manager of the hotel that if we didn’t leave, he was calling the police,” said Aaron Cannon.Michelle Rock, who owns Mama Rocks Desserts and T’Geaux Boys food trucks, grew up on Pleasure Island. She says its the residents of Carolina Beach who are hurt the most by the ordinance.“They want to enjoy that same experience that everybody else in New Hanover County gets to enjoy. So it’s hurting actually the people, more than it is us.”Carolina Beach Mayor Joe Benson says the town has not yet reviewed the complaint, and they cannot comment at this time.We will continue to follow this story as it developslast_img read more

How proposed regulations could limit fishermen

first_img Nothing is final yet, but the commission is looking at implementing a commercial and recreational flounder season to keep the southern flounder population from running too low.“It’s definitely going to set us all back,” commercial fisherman Breece Gahl said. “That’s a huge fishery for us in the summertime and it’s where we make a lot of our money.”From recreational to commercial fishing, local fishermen might have to steer away from flounder.Related Article: Motts Channel Seafood welcomes customers first time since Florence“You know it’s a big local-only push around this area,” Mott’s Channel Seafood Manager Thomas Franz said. “So flounder being one of the local fish, if we have to import from somewhere else, it’s going to definitely drive the price up. It’s just supply and demand.”Franz says flounder brings in a huge amount of their business. If the recommendations are finalized, recreational fishermen will not be able to catch flounder for a year, and commercial fishermen will only be allowed to catch flounder during a few weeks in the fall.“I understand that there has to been something done for the conservation of the fish,” Franz said. “I’m not against that. but this is what I do and there are a lot of guys’ jobs on the line.”With things still uncertain, Franz says they could be forced to replace their flounder with other options or limit when they can sell it.With the flounder industry very much a part of Gahl’s livelihood, he may have to shift focus to other fish.“At the end of the day, I am trying to pay my light bill or rent and survive,” Gahl said. “The fact that I am doing it for a living, at the end of the day, I’m going to do anything and everything I can to make a dollar off the water each day.”The commission will have a final vote on the draft amendment in August. The proposal would lower southern flounder harvest by 72% in 2020. It also includes other proposed regulations on how flounder is caught. 00:00 00:00 spaceplay / pause qunload | stop ffullscreenshift + ←→slower / faster ↑↓volume mmute ←→seek  . seek to previous 12… 6 seek to 10%, 20% … 60% XColor SettingsAaAaAaAaTextBackgroundOpacity SettingsTextOpaqueSemi-TransparentBackgroundSemi-TransparentOpaqueTransparentFont SettingsSize||TypeSerif MonospaceSerifSans Serif MonospaceSans SerifCasualCursiveSmallCapsResetSave Settings NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Proposed regulations could start reining in certain commercial and recreational fisherman. The North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission voted last week to accept recommendations to help stop over fishing of flounder.- Advertisement – last_img read more
