That’s not the case – we’ve deliberately kept that on the table.”Tags:Labour /John McDonnell /The Independence Group /last_img read more

Under the partnership agreement Saints will allow

first_imgUnder the partnership agreement Saints will allow first team squad players to feature for Leigh in the Betfred Championship.Saints Chief Executive Mike Rush said: “We’re grateful to both John Duffy and the Centurions for entering into an agreement which will be beneficial for both clubs.“There have always been strong ties between the two clubs and there are strong friendships between key members of both organisations.“In reaching this decision, we considered the close proximity between the two clubs, the fine facilities that Leigh have and the excellent relationship and regard we hold for John Duffy, Paul Anderson and the other Leigh staff and officials.“Over the course of the season some members of our first team squad will need more game time for various reasons and this partnership will allow them to get that, playing at a good level in the Championship and in the right environment.“We look forward to watching our players develop from this agreement.”Leigh Centurions head coach John Duffy confirmed the partnership agreement was finalised after a meeting with Mike Rush and Saints head coach Justin Holbrook.Duffy said: “The opportunity to be able to partner a club like Saints is extremely beneficial for us, especially when you consider the calibre of player we will get each week.“We were on the back foot with starting our squad recruitment late and are down on numbers so we will now augment that with quality players and quality people.“We had a good meeting at Saints with Mike and Justin and also Paul Wellens and Ian Talbot from the coaching staff. They have trust in us that their players will get treated and coached in the right way and they acknowledge that their players have got to earn the right to play for Leigh Centurions with their performances in training and matches.“It’s a great partnership for Leigh Centurions and I’m sure will be extremely beneficial also for Saints. I’m confident the relationship between the two clubs will continue to flourish.”last_img read more

Food truck owners sue Carolina Beach over unconstitutional ordinance

first_imgNEW HANOVER COUNTY —  Food truck owners are taking on the town of Carolina Beach. They say the town passed unfair ordinances, and now they’re ready to do something about it.“Carolina Beach has turned the bridge to its island into a drawbridge that it has pulled up on competition. That’s not just wrong. It’s unconstitutional,” said attorney Justin Pearson.- Advertisement – Pearson says the town of Carolina Beach broke the law when they created an ordinance that banned food trucks for anyone that has not owned a brick-and-mortar restaurant in the town for more than a year.“We are here to hopefully convince Carolina Beach to do the right thing. I should point out that even if they banned food trucks entirely that would also be unconstitutional. But what’s particularly interesting about what’s going on in Carolina Beach is that they come right out and admit that they have no problem with food trucks, they just don’t like competition from outsiders,” said Pearson.Pearson is a senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, a national non-profit law firm that represents small business owners fighting unconstitutional laws.Related Article: Get your shag on this weekend at annual Carolina Beach Music FestivalAaron and Monica Cannon, who own A&M’s Red Food Truck, say the Institute for Justice reached out to them when they learned of the ordinance. They didn’t think they needed the help, until the town approached them while they were catering a private event.“He told the manager of the hotel that if we didn’t leave, he was calling the police,” said Aaron Cannon.Michelle Rock, who owns Mama Rocks Desserts and T’Geaux Boys food trucks, grew up on Pleasure Island. She says its the residents of Carolina Beach who are hurt the most by the ordinance.“They want to enjoy that same experience that everybody else in New Hanover County gets to enjoy. So it’s hurting actually the people, more than it is us.”Carolina Beach Mayor Joe Benson says the town has not yet reviewed the complaint, and they cannot comment at this time.We will continue to follow this story as it developslast_img read more

How proposed regulations could limit fishermen

first_img Nothing is final yet, but the commission is looking at implementing a commercial and recreational flounder season to keep the southern flounder population from running too low.“It’s definitely going to set us all back,” commercial fisherman Breece Gahl said. “That’s a huge fishery for us in the summertime and it’s where we make a lot of our money.”From recreational to commercial fishing, local fishermen might have to steer away from flounder.Related Article: Motts Channel Seafood welcomes customers first time since Florence“You know it’s a big local-only push around this area,” Mott’s Channel Seafood Manager Thomas Franz said. “So flounder being one of the local fish, if we have to import from somewhere else, it’s going to definitely drive the price up. It’s just supply and demand.”Franz says flounder brings in a huge amount of their business. If the recommendations are finalized, recreational fishermen will not be able to catch flounder for a year, and commercial fishermen will only be allowed to catch flounder during a few weeks in the fall.“I understand that there has to been something done for the conservation of the fish,” Franz said. “I’m not against that. but this is what I do and there are a lot of guys’ jobs on the line.”With things still uncertain, Franz says they could be forced to replace their flounder with other options or limit when they can sell it.With the flounder industry very much a part of Gahl’s livelihood, he may have to shift focus to other fish.“At the end of the day, I am trying to pay my light bill or rent and survive,” Gahl said. “The fact that I am doing it for a living, at the end of the day, I’m going to do anything and everything I can to make a dollar off the water each day.”The commission will have a final vote on the draft amendment in August. The proposal would lower southern flounder harvest by 72% in 2020. Uganda SMEs Slow On It Usage

first_imgAdvertisement Though Uganda’s mobile phone subscriptions have grown strongly over the last few years, internet usage has lagged behind largely due to limited access to computers. However, for a few thousands of shillings, one can get a good Smartphone fitted with a number of platforms that can enable them access various online products. As a result, product developers have become increasingly aware that the demands of internet users have become increasingly diverse.Mr. Godfrey Mutabazi, the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), recently told the East African Business Week that internet users had risen to 5 million at the end of last year from about 4.5 million in 2010. – Advertisement – With this has come an opportunity for SMEs that mostly rely on foot traffic, to market their products to a richer and wider audience. Mr. Ham Namakajjo, Google’s Uganda Country Manager told the East African Business Week recently that the SMEs have a whole range of opportunities to market their products in a cheaper way.“When you go to down town Kampala, you will find that the small traders have similar businesses that mainly rely on foot traffic. If someone never passes by their shops, then they will never know about them.So the Google trader platform works like the classified ads; you take pictures of your merchandize and put them online and when people are searching for shoes for instance, your merchandize and shop pop up,” Namakajjo said, adding, “This is a site that people go to when they are looking for a particular item. It therefore gives you a rich and much broader audience.”Ms Dorothy Ooko, Google’s Communications Manager for East and Francophone Africa, says that businesses that are not online are missing out on the potential that the internet provides.“If you are not online, you are only able to influence a few people, so only the people around you. But if you go online, it means that even someone in Mbarara (Western Uganda), Jinja (Eastern Uganda) Nairobi, (Kenya) will know about your business. ” Ooko says.Ooko adds that businesses can also take advantage of products like Google places on Google Plus local where they can put up their businesses and people can rate and recommend them.“If for instance it is a Friday and I’m trying to figure out where to go, I’ll simply go to Google plus and look out for the areas that have been highly recommended. So that gives you a much wider reach than if people were to pass it on by word of mouth or foot traffic”, he said.“We know that internet penetration is still very low in many parts of Africa and we are trying to increase that. How do we do that, is by making sure that more people are online-Since most people access the internet on their mobile handsets, we think that the cost of the mobile handsets should be VAT free to reduce on the cost of the mobile handsets so that more people can access the internet”, Ooko said.Total mobile subscribers in Uganda surged to 16 million last year, up from an estimated 13 million in 2010.last_img read more

Getting ones music on to Simfy Africa

first_imgAdvertisement These aggregators currently include Exact Mobile, TuneCore, Zimbalam, Finetunes, INgrooves, Ioda, The Orchard, Zebralution, Believe Digital and Good To Go. However, because Exact Mobile is a local shareholder in Simfy Africa, it seems to be the first point of call.Once artists have registered their music with one of these aggregators, it will be uploaded to Simfy Africa and they can start earning royalties, the amount of which will depend on how often their music is played.Simfy Africa claims that its tracing technology allows it to compile comprehensive reports for all music being listened to on the service. These reports are used to calculate the payments to artists and labels through the aggregators. – Advertisement – What this offers local artists and labels is a great distribution model and the ability to market and promote their music straight to the people who are listening.Artists or labels who need more information can email Simfy Africa on music@simfyafrica.com.Source: mybroadbandlast_img read more

BENS BLOG TicTac is alive and well – on Easyjet

first_img[dropcap]O[/dropcap]h, Blog. Returning from holiday. It’s like a bloody bereavement, isn’t it? But next stop Cheltenham, so I’ll be sticking my marching boots on, the moment I get indoors. One of the saddest things, in the game, in recent years, has been the loss of Tic-Tac, due to everyone now being obliged to stare at a Betfair screen, all day, whilst they’re at the races. But the highlight, of the flight back to Blighty, which I’m on now, has been seeing that the ancient art is still alive and well, and being used by Easyjet cabin-crew!Yes, when they need a sandwich, or any other item, from the other end of the plane, I’ve ‎noticed that they have a particular, manual, Tic-Tac style, sign for it. Fantastic!Sadly, I know that, as soon as any of the Corporate People, back at Easyjet HQ, hear of these unwaranted incidents of individuality, flare, and natural human communication, they will INSTANTLY send an email to their Computer People, and have them replaced by some kind of infernal app or beeping device. ISN’T ANYONE ALLOWED TO HAVE A BIT OF FUN ANYMORE?In other news:‎I visited Bistrot D’Alain several years ago and found it to be rather disappointing. However, it has now changed hands, and finished off a cracking week, for us, last night, in Tenerife. And great to see too, a family run restaurant, doing so well.Bistrot D’Alain, Valle Menéndez 16 38650 Los Cristianos, Tenerife, Spain. The Duck Magret and Tarte Tatin, dead-heated, as the best things I ate during the holiday. Although, the avocado and prawn starter, slightly, just slightly, let the side down. At €88 for 2 though, you’d certainly be paying nearly double that in London, for a meal as good.
