Coming into a season with big shoes to fill, the Ohio State women’s basketball team is opening its 2012-13 campaign in a big way. The Buckeyes open their season on Friday at the Carrier Classic against Notre Dame, and OSU is ready to start the year with three returning starters, including senior guard Tayler Hill, a preseason watch list candidate for the Wade Trophy. “I think it’s a big accomplishment personally as a player and it’s a good thing to be named,” Hill said. The senior guard is one of 25 NCAA Division I women basketball players named to the list for the 2013 State Farm Wade Trophy, which is awarded to the nation’s top player each year. The Minneapolis, Minn., native is no stranger to earning awards, either. Hill was a first team All-Big Ten selection last season and a member of the Big Ten’s All-Defensive team for the second succeeding year. Buckeye coach Jim Foster said it was not a surprise for Hill to be included on the list because of her performance last season. “She is a four-year starter, she had a great junior year,” Foster said. “She is a great player from both an offensive and defensive point of view and she is a very respected player.” Hill led the Buckeyes and the Big Ten last season in points scored, averaging 20.4 points per game. She averaged 12.4 points per game as a sophomore. The senior guard does not see herself making a big jump in points this season from her junior year. “I probably won’t jump as high as I did from sophomore year to junior year but around that range or a little higher,” Hill said. “From sophomore to junior year it was all about experience.” Alongside Hill, redshirt senior guard Amber Stokes and junior center Ashley Adams return as starters. OSU will have to do without sophomore forward Kalpana Beach who suffered a season-ending knee injury. Beach served as a starter for the Buckeyes last season. “Kalpana Beach just had surgery and will not play this year, but we got some depth and experience in her position,” Foster said. “We will see who steps up to the challenge.” Foster said junior center Darryce Moore, junior forward Martina Ellerbe and senior forward Emilee Harmon will need to step up to fill Beach’s shoes this season. Despite the loss of Beach, Hill said the team chemistry shouldn’t be affected. “I think it’s a good thing because we have played with each other over the years and have more experience in the front and backcourt and we know where each other are on the floor,” Hill said. “The chemistry is there between us.” Foster said the talent of former point guard and 2012 Big Ten Player of the Year Samantha Prahalis, who graduated and now plays for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, cannot be replaced. “Defensively, we are going to have to be a really good basketball team and we show signs of being that,” Foster said. “Offensively, no one player can take the place of Sammy Prahalis and we have to do that with a real team effort, and with every indication I have seen, this team is very willing to do that.” The Buckeyes are scheduled to open the season aboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston, S.C., on Friday against Notre Dame at 4 p.m.
Ohio State then-freshman Tre Leclaire maintains possession of the ball in the first quarter against Loyola Maryland in the first round of the NCAA tournament on May 14, 2017 at Ohio Stadium. Credit: Sheridan Hendrix | Oller ReporterThe Ohio State men’s lacrosse team ran down the historic ramp into Ohio Stadium today trailing in the Big Ten standings and facing a three-game losing streak while it prepared to meet Penn State on the field needing a win.The Buckeyes (5-5, 0-1 Big Ten) didn’t get the result they wanted, however, dropping the afternoon affair 12-4 to the Nittany Lions (7-3, 1-0 Big Ten). With a season performance from sophomore goalie Colby Kneese and a dominant show in the faceoff x from sophomore midfielder Gerard Arceri, Penn State overpowered Ohio State both offensively and defensively to emerge from the game with its first conference win of the year.“Well there wasn’t a whole lot of things that we were crazy about, I mean, at the end of the day hats off to Penn State,” Ohio State head coach Nick Myers said. “At the end of the day it’s a loss and we’re going to have to circle back up and make sure we put an emphasis on the things we’ve got to do to be successful in this conference and go after our first conference win on the road.”Penn State worked tirelessly all game to command a significant seven-goal lead going into the final period — a mountain that proved too high for the Buckeye offense to overcome. The Nittany Lions’ offensive flexibility lent itself to plenty of high-quality passes, assists and goal-scoring opportunities, while their stolid defense and Kneese’s quick reflexes kept a staggering 80 percent of Ohio State’s shots out of the cage.Penn State senior midfielder Ryan Keenan dominated offensively for his team, scoring a hat-trick and putting up seven shots against Ohio State sophomore goalie Josh Kirson. Three other Lions posted at least two goals in the scorebook. Ohio State’s goals were few, but nevertheless impressive, especially given Kneese’s efficiency. In the second period, freshman attackman J.T. Bugliosi, assisted by senior attack Colin Chell, shook a defender next to the cage and went behind his back, slipping the ball past an unsuspecting Kneese. Three other Buckeyes recorded goals. Both teams put up 35 shots, but in the end it was Penn State that had more quality finishes. Meyers said the team had to take the tough decision and use it as a means for them to improve for next week’s game against No. 6 Johns Hopkins. “You’ve got to make it about you,” Meyers said. “You know, you’ve got to go back to your training and hope that your training gets you through. I mean, kid had a nice job in the goal, he certainly had a lot of saves. We have to put that on ourselves, you know, putting the ball in the net is something we’ve got to make a priority and it starts with us in terms of the repetitions that we get.”While the result might be on players’ minds in the short term, dwelling on it won’t be in their agenda as they embrace a full week of practice in preparation for another difficult conference matchup next weekend.“You’ve just gotta move past this one and get back to work this week and prepare for [Johns] Hopkins next week,” Chell said. Ohio State hits the road for its second Big Ten game and travels to Baltimore to meet Johns Hopkins (6-2, 0-0 Big Ten) at noon April 7.
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has questioned his successor Mauricio Pochettino’s decisions in light of their 4-2 derby defeat to ArsenalThe Argentine made the shock decision to start Juan Foyth instead of Toby Alderweireld on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium. The 20-year-old Foyth notably lost possession of the ball within his own half in the build-up to Alexandre Lacazette’s goal – which handed Arsenal a 3-2 lead.Pochettino later defended Foyth and insisted that his fellow Argentine was one of the best players out there. But, for Sherwood, Alderweireld’s absence from the derby was a mistake and he also expects the Belgian to leave by next year.“Hindsight makes it easy to be a football manager when you look at decisions made,” Sherwood told Sky Sports’ The Debate.“I was surprised when I saw Alderweireld wasn’t in the starting line-up with Vertonghen.Merson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson.“I know that they’re looking to the future because Alderweireld almost certainly will not be at the football club next year.“The young Argentinian boy Foyth has come into the side, struggled a bit and made a few mistakes at Wolves.“He made a mistake in the derby at the beginning of last week against Chelsea when he should have given a penalty but he got away with that. Then he made a mistake at the weekend.“Now I understand Mauricio wants to see if he can play in the big games, give him the confidence and try to stick with him and there comes a time when you’re playing in that position, which is a very responsible position on the field, when you make a mistake you invariably get punished at the top level. He’s made too many and maybe the boy needs to come out.“It was a massive game, it’s a north London derby and arguably the best centre-half partnership in the country is Alderweireld and (Jan) Vertonghen.“But it’s easy sitting here after the event. Mauricio makes a lot of decisions for that football club and you have to say 99 per cent of them have been correct up to now.”

27-year-old Capital Community News reporter, Charnice Milton. (Courtesy Photo)The family of a local reporter who was killed in Southeast Washington, D.C. a year earlier gathered May 27 to honor the anniversary of the woman’s death, and to urge witnesses to come forward in both her case and in the city’s other unsolved homicides.According to The Washington Post, Charnice Milton, a 27-year-old Capital Community News reporter, was killed on May 27, 2015 by a shot fired from a group on dirt bikes passing a bus stop where Milton was transferring buses. Milton’s stepfather, Kenneth McClenton, told the Post at the time that the intended target of the shooting used her as a human shield. This week’s event succeeded in renewing attention for the case, he said.“I think we were very successful in reaching out to a population that normally is kind of aloof in terms of dealing with this matter and getting involved,” McClenton told the AFRO. “We reached out to a lot of people; we hope that some tips will come in, so that we can solve this case that was not just on Charnice tonight, it was also on other cases.”Along with members of the Metropolitan Police Department, approximately 60 people attended the vigil, including Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner Paul Trantham, D.C. GOP Senior Vice Chairman Ralph Chittams, Sr., Anacostia Coordinating Council Philip Pannell, and Sandra Gliss, mother of Tamara Gliss, who was shot and killed two days before Milton in the Shaw area of the city.“I think that the people who came here were showing love, they came to support us and the cause, to show love, and that they care that makes a difference,” Francine Milton, Charnice’s mother, said. “People being present, not afraid, not hiding, showing that they care about what is going on in their community makes a difference. If we go in our houses and close the door, it’s not going to work.”District Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said Milton’s homicide remains an open case.“We never give up, we never stop taking information, we never stop trying to close homicide cases; and so I try to reiterate that to much as I can to family members, as painful as it is, we don’t want to give up hope,” Lanier told Washington, D.C. NBC affiliate WRC-TV.As of May 27, there have been 50 homicides in D.C., compared with 49 at this time in 2015. Of this year’s deaths, 36 have occurred east of the Anacostia River.Anyone with information on Milton’s homicide or any other homicide in D.C. is asked to contact detectives at 202-437-0451, 202-497-4754 or the homicide branch number is 202-645-9600. A $25,000 reward is being offered.
