The brief was for a modern, low maintenance dwelling with views in all directions, and provided an opportunity to re-imagine the vernacular a modern-day beach house.Save this picture!© Benjamin HoskingSave this picture!Ground floor planSave this picture!© Benjamin HoskingThe principle sitting of the house locates the primary form close to the southern boundary to provide a northern orientation to the principal living spaces. The spatial layout was also informed by the clients desire to be able to view the outdoors in all directions from all rooms in the house – a requirement informed by their previous house located on an expansive farm in western Victoria. Save this picture!© Benjamin HoskingThe project provided an opportunity for a private house to engage at an urban level and explores the relationship between public and private space. The ground floor living space and upper-level windows are articulated with mechanically operable screens creating a seamlessly integrated façade. Pragmatically the operable shutters expose views to the Barwon River, control ventilation and solar access and provide privacy from the adjacent street. The screens are built using Western Red Cedar, a highly sustainable forestry product. The operability and translucency of the shutters contribute to a level of physical engagement with the street. This is amplified in the evenings when the glowing perforations animate the façade and create a playful and vibrant façade, whilst providing privacy from the street below.  Save this picture!© Benjamin Hosking The project employs several passive solar and ESD initiatives. Recesses in the ground floor façade provide the ground floor living, dining and bedroom spaces with protection from the summer sun, whilst allowing the winter sun to passively heat the spaces. A north-facing courtyard is formed between the two living areas, providing a seamless entertaining area when the doors are open from the dining space. Enclosed on three sides, the courtyard is sheltered from the cold southern winds, whilst the overhanging floor plate provides protection from sun to the dining space through the summer periods. The travertine tiles on the slab act as a thermal mass to absorb and store heat. Crossflow ventilation occurs between the northern southern courtyards, passively cooling the living, dining and kitchen spaces. Stormwater is collected in a 20,000L water tank and reused for garden irrigation and toilet flushing, and photovoltaic solar panels and a solar hot water system are located on the roof.Save this picture!© Benjamin HoskingSeachange House sought to achieve value for money outcome, balancing between the client aspirations, site constraints and budget limitations, whilst employing a wide range of ESD principles. This process resulted in a home that is relatively low cost, robust and minimal, yet notably integrates the qualities of light and volume to subtly amplify the owners’ living conditions and actively engages and contributes to the street and its coastal surrounds. Save this picture!© Benjamin HoskingProject gallerySee allShow lessDragon Boat Museum / Li Xiaodong AtelierSelected ProjectsLuxembourg Learning Center / Valentiny Hvp ArchitectsSelected Projects Share Houses Save this picture!© Benjamin Hosking+ 17Curated by Paula Pintos Share ShareFacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsappMailOrhttps://www.archdaily.com/927981/seachange-house-solomon-troup-architects Clipboard CopyHouses•Barwon Heads, Australia Lead Architect: CopyAbout this officeSolomon Troup ArchitectsOfficeFollow#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesBarwon HeadsOn FacebookAustraliaPublished on November 08, 2019Cite: “Seachange House / Solomon Troup Architects” 07 Nov 2019. Sexual assault in prison

Relatives say that when they visited him for the first time in Evin prison on 14 July, he told them he had been victim of violence in the presence of the Tehran deputy prosecutor general during his first night in prison. In the course of the conversation in the visiting room, Tajik used the Farsi term “hatke hormat,” which means “to be dishonoured.” His lawyer, Mohammad Sharif, said the term is used in legal language to refer to a sexual assault.Conversations in the visiting room between detainees and family members are recorded by the prison authorities, who let it be known that they are doing this. The aim is both to monitor what is said and to discourage prisoners from saying too much. Tajik was therefore not free to specify what he meant by “being dishonoured.”Mehdi Karoubi, one of the opposition candidates in the June 2009 presidential election, published an open letter in his newspaper Etemad e-Melli on 29 July 2009 in which he said young people were being raped in Iran’s prisons. “Young people have been brutally raped and have subsequently suffered depression and seriously psychological and physical problems,” Karoubi wrote. Former detainees who have managed to flee abroad have confirmed being the victims of sexual attacks, despite the pressure put on them and their families and despite the government’s repeated denials (http://en.rsf.org/iran-newspaper-suspended-in-latest-18-08-2009,34223.html).Four journalists and political activists have told Reporters Without Borders about cases of sexual abuse in Iran’s prisons.“The international community has been fully alerted to what is happening in Iranian prisons for the past year,” Reporters Without Borders said. “It is time for Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay to press the Iranian authorities to accept a visit from the UN special rapporteur on torture, so that he can investigate the allegations of mistreatment in Iranian prisons.”The authorities did not reveal where they were holding Tajik for nearly a month after his arrest at his home on 12 June. His lawyer has still not been able to see him or examine his case file. When a detainee is held incommunicado in this manner, it can be regarded as a case of forced disappearance and as a crime against humanity. Ali Malihi, an online journalist who used to work for Etemad e-Melli and Sahrvand, was meanwhile sentenced by a Tehran revolutionary court on 25 July to four years in prison and a fine of 100,000 toman (80 euros) on charges of “activity against national security” and insulting the president. to go further July 27, 2010 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Sexual assault in prison RSF_en Receive email alerts News After Hengameh Shahidi’s pardon, RSF asks Supreme Leader to free all imprisoned journalists News Newslast_img read more

Read The Official “Phish Day” Proclamation From NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio

first_imgToday, the NYC Mayor’s Office has released the official text of its “Phish Day” proclamation on August 6th. Outside of honoring Phish for their monumental Baker’s Dozen run, the proclamation also recognizes the group for their charitable organization, The Waterwheel Foundation. As an inside shout-out to Phish fans, the final sentence begins with, “Tonight, as vibrantly dressed fans gather at MSG to bounce around the room and await the Reprise.” You can read the entirety of the proclamation below, courtesy of the NYC Mayor’s Office. On August 6th and after twelve prior nights of donut-themed shows, Phish’s Baker’s Dozen run at the iconic Madison Square Garden came to a close, with the Vermont quartet ending the run on a high with their final “Glazed” performance. On Sunday ahead of the evening’s performance, news broke that New York City mayor, Bill De Blasio, had proclaimed the day to be “Phish Day” in honor of the end of their celebrated, thirteen-night residency. Already, Phish’s time at Madison Square Garden was historic—outside of the fact that Baker’s Dozen saw the band perform the longest consecutive streak of shows to ever take place at the Garden, Phish did so without repeating a single song, and Friday, August 4th, marked Phish’s 50th show at the 20,000+ person venue. As such, Mayor De Blasio’s proclamation was the perfect capstone to Phish’s two-week MSG run, solidly marking the last night of the Baker’s Dozen as an important milestone in both Phish’s history and the larger history of the residency’s host city.Donut Sampler: Relive Phish’s Baker’s Dozen By Rewatching These Free Pro-Shot VideosAfter the formal announcement of “Phish Day,” the NYC Mayor’s Office tweeted a picture of Team Phish backstage at MSG with members of the Mayor’s Office holding the proclamation beneath a sign honoring Phish for performing 50 shows at the well-loved venue along with the caption: “Thanks for the memories we shared, we’ll never forget either.” The Office then posted a close-up image of the proclamation, though it was, unfortunately, a little difficult to read.last_img read more

GMP to conserve over 2,700 acres as part of wind development

first_imgGreen Mountain Power Corp,Green Mountain Power (GMP) has announced that it will conserve more than 2,700 acres of land in the Northeast Kingdom. The land is being protected as part of GMP’s Kingdom Community Wind project on Lowell Mountain that will produce enough electricity to supply 24,000 homes.”GMP has protected more than 2,700 acres to mitigate the 159 acre impact of the project,” said Mary Powell, President and CEO of Green Mountain Power. “The conserved land provides for important habitat to offset the overall project effects and provides connectivity to other conserved lands. This level of mitigation is unprecedented in Vermont.”When the Public Service Board approved the 21 turbine Kingdom Community Wind project in May 2011, it included a condition that GMP obtain easements of “adequate size and location” to address fragmentation of habitat caused by the project. In an order entered on December 23, 2011, the Board approved GMP’s proposal to conserve 1,662 acres of wildlife habitat on two parcels in Eden, VT.The Eden parcels are “the most important that we could identify for maintaining ecological connectivity and addressing the fragmentation impacts of the wind project,” said Vermont Agency of Natural Resources attorney Jon Groveman in a letter filed with the Public Service Board. The conserved land, on either side of East Hill Road, helps maintain the ecological and landscape connectivity that currently exists between the Lowell Mountain Habitat block and Green River Reservoir habitat block. The Agency of Natural Resources has asked the Vermont Land Trust to hold the Eden conservation easements. In addition to the two parcels just approved for conservation in Eden, GMP has also conserved approximately 1,070 acres on Lowell Mountain. Of these acres, 778 acres will be conserved in perpetuity and another 292 acres will be conserved for the life of project plus 25 years.”We heard loud and clear that Vermonters want renewable energy, including projects like Lowell wind, built in Vermont,” said Powell. “While the construction of any new electrical generation has environmental impacts, Green Mountain Power worked hard to minimize the impacts in building Kingdom Community Wind. Where these impacts could not be avoided we worked closely with wildlife specialists to forever preserve natural habitat and wildlife corridors.”In its order approving the connectivity easements, the Public Service Board noted that the primary purpose of the easements is to conserve and protect ecological and landscape connectivity between the Lowell Mountain and Green River reservoir habitat blocks. The easements will also allow production of sustainable forestry resources; sustainable management of soil resources, conservation of scenic and natural resources, improving the quality of life for Vermonters, and maintaining the essential characteristics of the VT countryside for the benefit of future generations.About Green Mountain PowerGreen Mountain Power generates, transmits, distributes and sells electricity in Vermont and is a leader in wind and solar generation. Australia’s largest solar PV project now producing power

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享CNBC:Australia’s “largest fully-operational photovoltaic facility” has commenced full-scale commercial operation, it was announced Thursday.French firm Neoen said in a statement that its Coleambally Solar Farm in New South Wales has 567,800 solar photovoltaic panels and would generate more than 390,000 megawatt hours of renewable energy per year. This, Neoen said, is enough to power over 65,000 homes in New South Wales. Photovoltaic refers to a way of directly converting light from the sun into electricity. The Coleambally development is situated in the state’s Riverina region and is spread across 550-hectares of land. It is backed by a 12-year power purchase agreement with EnergyAustralia, an energy retailer. Under the terms of the deal, EnergyAustralia will use 70 percent of the facility’s output, with the rest sold directly to market.“Coleambally Solar Farm is an example of the projects that will underpin a modern energy system in Australia,” Franck Woitiez, Neoen Australia’s managing director, said in a statement.Blessed with an abundance of sunshine, large-scale solar electricity is “rapidly expanding” in Australia, according to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). Over 2 million Australian homes have a solar system installed on their rooftop, ARENA adds.More: Australian solar farm starts full-scale commercial production Australia’s largest solar PV project now producing powerlast_img read more

I was unfaithful in my marriage, the most important relationship in my life and held accountable for that. This failure is on me, and me alone and I take full responsibility for my actions.”Carl baptized Justin and helped the Grammy winner turn to spirituality during a dark period in Justin’s life.Hailey Baldwin Unfollows Justin Bieber Former Pastor Carl LentzCarl Lentz Courtesy of Carl Lentz/Instagram“I think Justin has a really deep, mature relationship with Jesus. I don’t think my teaching or my preaching has made even remotely as big of an impact as his own desire and passion and love for Jesus,” the Own the Moment author exclusively told Us Weekly in November 2017. “That’s how it should work. … I think all his changes are a credit to him and him allowing God to continue to use him. Four regions call off PSBB amid lack of funds, central government’s easing plan

first_imgThe administrations of three municipalities and one regency, namely Gowa regency in South Sulawesi, Makassar also in South Sulawesi, Tegal in Central Java and Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan have decided not to continue implementing large-scale social restrictions (PSBB), leaving 23 other regions holding on to the measures to ward off COVID-19 transmission. There are also only four provinces imposing the PSBB at provincial level, namely Jakarta, West Java, Gorontalo and West Sumatra, which comprise 58 regencies and municipalities. Meanwhile, as of Wednesday, 410 regencies and municipalities across all 34 provinces have been affected by the coronavirus. The decision of the regional administrations to put an end to the PSBB without any more extensions came in the past two weeks, with some considering its ineffectiveness after the central government allowed resumption of public transportation services early this month. 1. Gowa regency, South SulawesiThe Health Ministry granted the request made by Gowa regency in South Sulawesi in late April and the regency imposed the PSBB starting May 4.After the two-week implementation ended on May 17, the local administration decided not to extend the restrictions.“PSBB regulations no longer synergize with the government’s current policies, […] which will go linear even down to the village administrations,” Gowa regent Adnan Purichta Ichsan Yasin Limpo said during a recent teleconference, as quoted by kompas.com. Adnan conceded that another factor pushing him to pull the plug on the policy was the inability of the Gowa administration to support the large budget needed if the PSBB were still in place.Read also: Bali fights virus same way it attracts tourists – with local customsHe said the spread of the coronavirus was centered in the districts bordering the city of Makassar, namely Somba Opu district, Pallangga district and Barombong district. The regency has 18 districts. To prevent further transmission, the Gowa administration is currently relying on strict monitoring of people’s mobility, while raising awareness of the community to follow physical distancing and other health protocols.2.    Makassar city, South SulawesiPSBB implementation in Makassar, the famous port city home to 1.5 million people, lasted for almost a month. The first phase was from April 24 to May 5, before the administration extended it to May 22 but decided not to go to a third phase.Makassar acting mayor Yusran Jusuf believed the community had grasped the idea of proper health protocols when implementing the two-stage PSBB, so that he planned to adapt such protocols into a Perwali (mayoral regulation).“We have coordinated with business actors in Makassar related to the PSBB expiration and the issuance of Perwali regarding health protocols. These health protocols are guidelines, but binding, with sanctions for violators,” Yusran said last week.3.    Tegal city, Central JavaTegal was the first region in Central Java to implement the PSBB at the regency or municipal level. It was also the first city in the country that decided not to continue with the restriction policy after implementing it in two phases from April 23 to May 22.Read also: Hotels in Bali brace for travel-restriction relaxation, ‘new normal’Toward the end of the PSBB period, the Tegal administration decided not to extend to a third phase given that the region had been designated a “green zone” for COVID-19.Before implementing the PSBB, Tegal imposed a local lockdown. Tegal Mayor Dedy Yon Supriyono closed all access to Tegal city in late March and planned for the lockdown to last until around July.4.    Palangkaraya city, Central KalimantanThe Palangkaraya administration decided not to extend the implementation of the PSBB, which were first applied in May 11 and lifted on the first day of Idul Fitri on May 24.The local authorities considered the PSBB ineffective in restricting people’s mobility in crowded places like traditional markets, where transmission of COVID-19 often occurred.“After evaluation, we then decided to end the one-stage PSBB and go on with the so-called Humanis District-Scale Restrictions [PSKH],” said Palangkaraya deputy mayor Umi Mastikah. The city’s COVID-19 task force head Emi Abriyani said after the policy ended, that the administration would strengthen patrols and command posts in areas prone to transmission, including in the cross-border areas. She further said the city would still impose limited operational hours for businesses as well as social and physical restrictions to curb the spread of the virus. (syk)Topics :last_img read more

Bolt coasts through into 200m semis

first_imgBy Nick MulvenneyRIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) – Usain Bolt roused a quiet morning at the Olympic stadium as only he can yesterday, remaining firmly on course for his historic ‘triple triple’ by coasting through the 200 metres heat in 20.28 seconds.Racing in the ninth heat and cheered every step of the way by the sparse but vocal crowd, the Jamaican led coming off the bend and was able to take his foot off the gas to progress comfortably to Wednesday’s semi-finals.Bolt secured the 100 metres title on Sunday to take another step on the path to an unprecedented third successive sweep of all three Olympic sprint titles — 100, 200 and 4×100 metres. The Jamaican considers the 200 his specialist event and has promised to mount a Rio assault on his 1999 world record of 19.19, but that will have to wait for the final.“I’ve recovered but I’m a bit tired,” Bolt told reporters.“I’m not really a morning person, I just came out here to qualify and that’s what I did. I get nervous because it’s my favourite event and I don’t want to lose. I’ll be much better tomorrow.”The man most likely to beat him, Justin Gatlin, also had no problems getting through, even if he coasted through the final 20 metres to win his heat in a relatively pedestrian 20.42.The American said he had already moved on from the disappointment of being beaten once again at a major championship by Bolt after winning silver in the 100.“I’m been motivated since the day I got here and I’ll be motivated until that last shot across the line,” said the 34-year-old.“I’m in a whole different event now, I have to take my 100 metres hat off and concentrate on the 200. It’s not even about time at this stage, it’s about execution.”His compatriot LaShawn Merritt is the fastest man this year over the half-lap and he showed no signs of fatigue from winning a bronze medal in the 400 metres on Sunday, a strong finish carrying him to victory in heat eight in 20.15.Canada’s Andre de Gasse, bronze medallist in the 100, ran the quickest time of the session, clocking 20.09 to cross first in the final heat.Bolt’s compatriot Yohan Blake, who finished fourth in the 100 on Sunday, was third on the timesheets, easing up over the last 10 metres to finish in 20.13.“I’m really feeling comfortable,” said Blake. “My chances are really good, I (have) been training really hard and I’m feeling more speed and strength.”American Ameer Webb had to sweat it out to qualify on time after finishing third in the same heat, which was won by Bruno Hortelano in a Spanish record time of 20.12, but his 20.31 ultimately proved quick enough to keep him in the competition.last_img read more

Price organizations express support for Caruso, Austin

first_imgAlex Freedman, a graduate student at Price, said he and other members of the Price Student Organization Coalition wrote the letter to voice their support for Austin’s decision to fire Ellis. He said that ever since Austin began to serve as the University’s interim president, he feels more engaged with and aware of University decisions. Student leaders in the Price School of Public Policy penned a letter on Jan. 24 supporting the changes Board of Trustees Chairman Rick Caruso and Interim President Wanda Austin made in their effort to increase accountability and transparency at USC. The Daily Trojan obtained the letter on Saturday. “Anyone who is making statements publicly in favor of that administration over steps toward reconciling with that and facing it head on as messy or as potentially damaging as it could be in the short term is also sending signals that student welfare doesn’t matter,” Freedman said. “We wrote this letter because we wanted to send a message that we’re paying attention now more than ever, and we like the direction that things have been going as far as moving to make changes and progress,” Freedman said. “We want to make sure that momentum continues to grow rather than stall or turn around.” The Price Student Organization Coalition, which has representatives from organizations including the Associated Students of Planning and Development, Price Latino Student Association, Graduate Policy Administration Community, Queer Policy Caucus, Students of Color and Allies Policy Forum, Price Social Innovation and Asian Pacific Islander Caucus signed the letter, lauding Caruso’s and Austin’s actions. “The course set by Chair Caruso and Interim President Austin has shown a new level of transparency, integrity and responsiveness to student, staff and faculty desires that not only reflects the on-campus climate but is also working to repair a badly damaged reputation for our school,” the letter read. “The reported actions of trustees Roski and Hsieh actively work against those steps forward.” “As student leaders, we want to drive home that the appearance of this situation presents publicly as a struggle between pursuing a bold, new agenda and maintaining a morally compromised status quo,” the letter read. The price of support: Student leaders from organizations in the Price School of Public Policy wrote a letter in support of Board of Trustees Chairman Rick Caruso and Interim President Wanda Austin. (Daily Trojan file photo) The letter was a response to trustees Ming Hsieh and Ed Roski’s public letters criticizing Caruso’s handling of a meeting in December during which board members voted to support Austin’s decision to terminate Marshall School of Business Dean James Ellis. center_img Graduate student Edmundo Diaz Jr., a coalition member who signed the letter, said he and other students wanted to show Caruso and Austin they have support as they try to change the University’s culture. The students wrote that they decided to vote for a show of confidence, regardless of the public  struggles among Caruso, Austin and some trustees. Freedman said Hsieh and Roski’s letters denouncing Caruso show they are in favor of the “status quo” of former President C. L. Max Nikias’ administration. He said Nikias covered up a number of controversies, including former campus gynecologist George Tyndall’s alleged abuse of hundreds of women. However, Hsieh said Caruso and Austin’s actions are harmful to Marshall and disagrees with the changes that have been made. “Maybe, the interim president or Caruso was more ‘transparent’ to students at the School of Public Policy and did not inform me as a trustee, or [the] Marshall School’s [faculty], students, alumni and donors why Dean Jim Ellis [was] removed,” Hsieh said in an email to the Daily Trojan. “We’re always critical, we always want USC to be the best and we [always] hold them accountable, just as anyone would do for any organization,” Diaz said. “We wanted to show a vote of confidence for Chairman Caruso and Dr. Austin. It is a very tough time for USC. They’re trying to rebuild their reputation, but we really just believe in what they’re doing.” The University and the Price School of Public Policy declined to comment. Ed Roski did not respond to request for comment by the time of publication.last_img read more
